Temporary and Short Term Car Insurance Exclusions

Normal long-term car insurance policies can cover everything—liability, comprehensive, collision, and even extra coverage such as additional drivers, and rental vehicles. Temporary Car insurance —insurance that issues cover for anywhere from a single day up to twenty-eight days — and short term car insurance — insurance that issues cover for anywhere from one month to six months — is really very little different to the long-term car insurance policy solution.

However, temporary and short term car insurance is much more flexible than a regular insurance policy with high premiums paid out every six months or on an annual basis. In face, temporary and short term car insurance is kind of like visiting a cafeteria. There are many food choices, but the diner only eats what he or she wants.

For example, all car insurance policies carry the minimum liability cover. With this type of policy, If you’re in an accident and it was your fault, you’re at least responsible for the damage done to the other vehicle or — in the worse case scenario—vehicles. You may also be required to fork out the necessary cash if there were any lost wages, medical costs, or pain and suffering compensation claims. Liability does not cover any damage done to your own vehicle or yourself. With a flexible temporary or short term car insurance policy, you can opt for only liability coverage like this if you wish but you usually do have further options.

Comprehensive insurance, of course, covers much more than just the required minimum liability. Comprehensive insurance can cover the cost of repairs to the vehicle you are driving. It can protect against uninsured and underinsured motorists. It can pay for the replacement and/or repairs if your vehicle has been damaged in an accident, been the victim of vandalism, or was stolen. Comprehensive also often (but not always; check your policy details!) covers natural disasters wreaking havoc upon your vehicle.

With a temporary or short term insurance policy, you can often pick out the pieces and parts that you want to have within the realms of the comprehensive policy. You can even cover additional drivers. Or, you could exclude all of it and only worry about liability.

Collision insurance is special in the fact that it pays for the replacement or repairs of your vehicle that has had damage due to an accident no matter whether it was your fault or someone else’s fault. The neat addition that many people don’t think about with regular collision insurance is that it also insures vehicle collisions with trees or street lamps. With a temporary or short term insurance policy, you can forget about collision insurance altogether if you wish, or in some cases simply exclude the tree and streetlamp clauses.

Temporary and Short Term Car Insurance Driver Eligibility Requirements

One of the greatest aspects of temporary and short term car insurance policies is that you are easily able to insure additional drivers to your personal vehicle.

Many times, drivers can find themselves in situations where somebody else got into their car, drove it, and got into an accident. That kind of situation can void your car insurance policy. Obtaining temporary or short term car insurance can not only easily solve this problem, but can also keep your own personal driving record clean.

Temporary car insurance policies are available for just a single day up to twenty-eight days—perfect if you have friends or family staying for a while. Short term car insurance policies can cover your vehicle of choice from a month to six months, which is also perfect if you have friends or family staying for an extended period of time.

However, you have to be careful when purchasing temporary or short term car insurance because there are driver eligibility requirements that must be met by all drivers of the car.

First, to obtain temporary or short term car insurance, you must have a standard UK driving licence, or at leat have had a driver’s license from any country for a minimum of just over a year. With some companies a driver with a licence from the United States, Canada, or Australia are not eligible for temporary or short term car insurance in the UK.

Secondly, watch your penalty points. Any more than six penalty points and you can’t normally qualify for temporary or short term car insurance.

Third, the vehicle to be insured must be worth at least £1,500.

Lastly, if you are not twenty four or older, or you are not younger than seventy-five, most companies will not cover you.
